windows install crashing

i'm upgrading my dad's win2k to winxp. about 5 minutes into the installing drivers phase, there's a physical memory error and it reboots back to the beginning of the install. is there anyway to end the install or at least get back into win2k safe mode so i can get my dad's files off and do a clean install?

(if all else fails, i'll use a linux rescue disc)

Do you have another computer? Just attach the drive to your computer and do it from there. More than likely all the files are going to be there and you can do a back up that way.
