Is there a way to stop windows from spinning up the cd drive every time I open windows explorer or an application wants to look or save out a file ?

Not a major issue, but its annoying.

If there is no disk in the drive, it does not "spin up." There is, however, handshaking with the drive during the boot process. What seems to be the problem? The same process occurs during Explorer searches.

The problem is it is annoying to have to wait for the drive to spin up every time I open up explorer, only option is to take the disc out of the drive. If you are a gamer you know how annoying it can be to have to put in and take out disc.

I was hoping someone knew of a registry setting to stop it from doing that unless that drive was specifically clicked on. OSX and Linux both allow the drive to work that way.

Similar sort of thing happens with explorer and if you put blank medium to burn in the drive. Windows pauses explorer till it figures out what you just put in the drive. I would have thought with a multithreaded OS they would have overcome this.

Why not put the disk on your hard drive and eliminate having to use it?

Daemons (sp?) used to be the way to go. But so many games now have such complicated protection schemes that they won't even LOAD if they detect a CD emulator running. :( I used to use an emulator but had to stop...probably two years ago b/c certain games wouldn't load or run correctly without the actual CD in there.
