Windows Home Server

How do you get around the 512 MB of ram limit? The system I want to put it on only has 256 mb of ram. Yeah I know to little but I can't upgrade the ram because the system uses sdram and that is really to expensive for the most part. I have extra ram laying around but it is only ddr2 ram.

A quick look at eBay shows quite a bit of 512 MB modules of PC133 memory for around $10 with free shipping.

Thanks but is there anyway around the limit? I know there is for Windows Vista but how would it be done for Windows Home Server? Really don't feel like buying more ram for this system sense it is way to old. If I had to laying around I would install it.

Have you tried installing WHS with 256 MB of memory? It MIGHT work. I've never tried it. Server 2003 by itself would normally install.

Yep. Says windows home server installation failed minimum of 512 mb of ram needed. Just tried on my other older computer with 512 mb of ram but it only has a 40 GB hard drive. It gave me the same windows home server installation failed error but this time because my hard drive is not at least 65 GB. 🙁

Well I got it working with only 256 MB of ram but it was a pretty big hassle. Worth it though otherwise I would of thrown the older pc away.

Huge hassle but I installed Windows Home Server on a VM from my main machine, didn't want to restart, and after about 2 hours imaged the VM of Windows Home Server. Then transferred that hard drive image to machine with only 256 mb of ram. Seems to be working ok so far.

Now running into another problem with Windows Home Server where I can't get the remote server website to work. I had to turn on uPnP on my router but that was easy. The last step just always fails. Still learning a lot about WHS though and a little confused how to even get the imaging backups started. Then making sure it is actually working. The other thing that makes it a pain in the butt is that machine doesn't even have a keyboard but I mainly control it remotely from my main pc. So not really a problem. Though I have a space mouse and monitor connected to it so if the remote connection fails or begins to not work I always have that as backup.

In my experience, the only time you'll need a monitor or keyboard on a WHS is if you decide to re-install for some reason.

I don't worry about what WHS says about remote access. I configured my ISA Server's firewall to forward the needed ports (TCP ports 80 and 443) and it worked perfectly, even though WHS reported it was failing.

WHS' remote access functions are taken from SBS 2003's remote access, which is pretty widely used with very few issues. There's always the possibility that it's failing because of a lack of memory.

The automated client PC backups are set up automatically when you install the WHS client connection setup on each client PC. You can see the backup history for all the clients in the WHS Management Console.
