Windows Home Server V1 file conflicts

I have an Acer Aspire H340 home server running WHS version 1. I suddenly have file conflict notifications. The WHS help file isn't much help. But searching around on the Microsoft website it makes it sound like this may be an indication of a failing HD. But the hard drive window on the WHS console shows all three drives to be healthy, so I have no idea what drive may be acting up or what to do to address this. Can anyone help me find some direction to work on this? Right now I'm at a standstill.

It could definitely be a failing hard drive. But I have also had it occur when large files were edited and Windows was having a hard time syncing the changes (it's file based replication, so it can't work if the file is open). My suggestion would be to copy the conflicted files off of the server and check your SMART data for any indication of bad sectors. If everything checks out, delete the files off of the server and then copy them back on via your backup.

Having a network of 4 computers sharing files/music/video on our WHS v1 I have ran into this now and then, usually when doing work on something, and maybe switching back and forth between my laptop and desktop, for example.

Try a whole network reboot -- shut down your clients, reboot the server, then bring up the clients.

Thanks for the help. Things are getting progressively worse. I started getting more warnings and then I got a warning saying that one of my disks had failed. I have everything duplicated in WHS and I have separate backups so I'm not worried about losing data. I planned to remove the drive and work things out when I had time.

But one day later I started getting notifications that the server was not connected, even though the lights on the Acer box were all on and there were no warnings. So I rebooted the server and then I would have access. But this morning, even though the Win7 icon says the server is healthy, when I access the WHS console I get several error messages and then when the console opens the storage tab, shared folders tab and backup tabs are not there. Now I can't remove the bad drive since the tab to access that function isn't there to do it.

I'm not sure how to proceed now. There isn't much WHS help out there.

And things get even worse. Now I can't even access the WHS console. I get the same error messages as before but now the window just stays blue, nothing happens, no console at all. Where to do from here? Is there some kind of repair I can do? Acer is completely nonresponsive, their help is no help at all and not worth wasting time with it.

It increasingly sounds like it's your system disk that's in a state of failure.

Your first option is to reset the server console. I don't have a WHSv1 setup anymore, but I believe this is an option in the client connector. However I don't know if this is all that different from rebooting the server.

Your next option is to run safe re-install. But this is meant for corruption issues that can be fixed with a re-install, so if your system disk is going bad it wouldn't really solve the issue.

Ultimately if all of your data is duplicated and the above fails then the best thing to do would be to pull the good disk and move on from there.

I would head over to the forums at wegotserved. There's a ton of info over there about WHS V1 and how to recover from errors. There are also a lot of very knowledgeable people there willing to contribute and help you through recovery (if you do need to do that). Good luck.
