windows home server quesiton

I just finished installing windows home server and it looks like it automatically reformatted my 2nd and 3rd drive automatically so they could be added the storage pool. Is this normal, or did I miss something during the install. Fortunately only backups were on the drives, but I sure dont want to make such a mistake again in the future.

600gig is my storage pool to start, not bad. Will be adding more in the future.

I just installed WHS on a Dell server I had, it advised 2 or 3 times it was going to reformat all the drives it had access to.

That's normal... it can't (won't) add a drive to the storage pool without formatting it. If you install a new drive and tell WHS you want it added to the storage pool, it will get formatted.

Yup. If you add them to the Storage Pool, the drives get formatted.

If you just want to add an external hard drive (for making some backups of the WHS, then you don't have to add them to the Storage Pool.

Furthermore all drives get added to the storage pool by default. So if you don't want it in the pool, it needs to not be connected at installation.

I guess I should read more carefully. I thought I only saw warnings about formatting the drive that it was being installed on.

Yeah, it's one of the few things I don't like about WHS. I nearly nuked 3 drives full of data when I was testing it on my main rig.:|

Out of curiosity, what size did ya'll set to your sys ( C: ) dirve? I set it to the default of 20gb, and now it's full of logs. Now it's saying the drive is full, etc., etc. There are multiple (15-30) 2gb logs in the WHS/logs folder.

EDIT: The one thing I hate about this OS, is that there seems to be so little information about it.

My C drive is 20GB too, however I've had no problem with logs. Even with a few additional applications installed it's still at over 13GB free. If you're filling up with logs, something is wrong.

This talk of WHS made me take another look at my WHS backups. It's been reliable, but, the last two or three days, I started getting notifications that my primary desktop PC backups have failed. "Backup Server is unavailable". I'd been too busy to take a deeper look at it.

Whoops. I looked at the WHS System Event log. For the past couple of days, the WHS server has been rebooting itself every two hours like clockwowrk. I figured overheating (it's a small box with, now, three hard drives inside. Installing SpeedFan shows some absurdly high temperatures.

I shut the thing down and I'm going to move WHS to a cool-running C2Duo motherboard in a big Antec case that has proper room and cooling for multiple hard drives.

Whoops, again. I found that my WHS server is rebooting every two hours because this one is a trial version and it just expired. Actually, it's slightly more complicated than that, but that's why it's rebooting. No other warnings. Apparently those will EVENTUALLY come.
