Windows Home Server not working with Intel D510MO?

Hi,

I have downloaded the Windows Home Server (WHS) PowerPack3 evaluation DVD from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=e3694b69-93f6-4267-b881-55ce0648c784

I just tried to install it on a system based on an Intel D510MO motherboard with an Atom D510 CPU, 2 GB RAM, and a Samsung HD203WI 2 TB drive. The setup process goes smoothly in the beginning, until the setup has finished copying files to the HD and it performs a restart of the system. After that the systems starts up again, and the WHS setup loads a few files and drivers preparing it to finish the installation. But right after that there is a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) with a STOP error. I have tried to restart the system, and even tried to re-install WHS again, but I get the same BSOD anyway.

Now I just wonder if the Intel D510MO (or the HD I use) are not compatible with WHS? Is there anything that can be done to make this work?

Thanks!

PS. I have previously had Window 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed on the same computer, and then everything worked fine, so the hardware itself is likely working ok. DS

WGS's forums have a thread where users have been reporting success with that board, so I think it's unlikely that the culprit is an outright incompatible board. So long as you aren't doing anything crazy with your configuration (WHS is basically part of the XP/2K3 generation, so it doesn't have support for things like AHCI), then clearly it should be working.

It could be a hard drive issue, but it's hard to say. Did the BSOD have any useful information?

Thanks for your reply! I also found the info about AHCI not being supported on other forums, so I turned it off and then WHS installed properly!

However now I've found another issue; Unfortunately the integrated graphics (Intel GMA3150) in the D510 CPU does not seem to officially support Windows Server 2003 (which WHS is based on). For more info see: http://forums.anandtech.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=29553067. On the forum you referred to some people had successfully used the drivers for Windows XP 32-bit though, so I've now successfully installed those and so far they seem to be working ok.

I guess such issues are expected when running lately released hardware with a 7 year old OS... ;) Another reason why WHS 2010 (or what it finally will be named) would be a welcome release.
