Hi -

I'm running Windows Home Server (latest version) and I'm having trouble getting a game to work. The software worked fine on windows server 2003, so I believe it's a configuration issue.

I updated the graphics card drivers as well as set hardware acceleration to full.
In DXDiag:

DirectDraw Accel: Not available
Direct3d Accel: Enabled
AGP Texture Accel: Not available

The game actually runs (it's an MMO, and I use the computer to run a portal bot), it just doesn't render anything, and eventually crashes after a few minutes. However, it logs in to the world, and I can drive around in the blank screen, which others can verify does work in the world.

You don't have a desktop machine to play the game? I'm not sure if you can do this on WHS -- I've never tried.

I try to avoid asking questions like this, but it's a really good one. Both XP and Vista are available for less cost than WHS, and I know of no free source of WHS software. WHS itself has a REALLY complicated file management system that may be fragile. The last thing I'd do is install non-server applications, browse or download files from the Internet, or run games on it.

I do have a desktop machine to play games, it's just that I run a portal bot (which in the past was running on my windows 2003 server). It just stays logged in to the world, and opens portals on request. I don't play on that computer, I just use VNC to check in on it.

Are you aware of this site? Blowing up the second picture on that page (taken from DXDiag) shows -

DirectDraw Acceleration: Enabled
Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled
AGP Texture Acceleration: Enabled

Were you able to enable all three before, using straight Server 2003?

Did you enable those options in dxdiag before or after installing drivers for the video card?

I think RM hit the nail on the head, you need all three enabled.

RM - Yes when I ran server 2k3, thats what I had to do. However, this time, after enabling the hardware accel (the slider), the DXDiag does not give me the option to enable/disable DirectDraw and AGP Textures, they are listed as unavailable (instead of disabled).

Edit: I believe my problem is related to Remote Desktop functionality of WHS.
