Hi,

Windows 98SE hangs as soon as I install the driver for the Matrox G400 video driver and reboot it. I have my aperture speed set to 4x. I have'nt changed anything else in the bios. If I run my system without the driver for the Matrox G400 everything runs fine. I have even tried to downloaded the driver from the web and installed it ( have installed it after reformating the drive and installing the windows for the nth time)

PLEASE HELP!

My system configuration is as Follows:
P III FCPGA 733MHz
Trinity 400 - S1854 Mother board
2 128 MB PC100 Kingston Memory - DIMM SDRAM in slots 1,2
Matrox G400 Video card - single head
Sound Blaster Live - MP3 sound card
HP 9100 Read Write CDROM
Linksys 10/100 ethernet card
CNEt voice/data/fax modem 56kps
soundblaster 2 speakers.

Thanks
Sue

What vers. driver u installing? I think 6.04 is the latest *non* beta for Win8x/ME. Also, how are you chaning the AGP to 4x? In the BIOS? Can u change it to anything else? 2x? I'm not sure, but I thought the G400 was a 2x only card...hmmm, maybe not though. At what time is the computer locking up? What do u see on the screen last? Can u give it the '3 finger salute' and it reboots fine or do u have to push the 'power/restart' button to get it to do anything?

ics,
The S1854 uses the Via chipset. Make sure you install the latest Via drivers before you install the Matrox drivers. I built a system configured similarly and didn't experience any problems.

I also experienced such a problem with the Trinity 400 board. I setup the video for manual and ec under the bios and left it at 2x and the system is fully stable at 133. I never could get the 4x to work correctly.

G400 rarely works in AGP4X well. Keep it at AGP 2X.

The BETA 6.01 drivers are the fastest and are relativly stable. If you have problems with the 6.01, go with the non-beta 6.04. If you still have problems with those, go with the non-beta 5.30, which are the most stable G400 drivers on the planet, but are a tad slow.

Get the latest VIA 4in1 drivers, as Wallysaurus said. This can solve a lot of problems. Look for versions 4.24 and later.

Also try changing the AGP aperature size. 128mb or 64mb are the usual choices for 256 mb of ram, but try them all to see which one works best.
