I don't really know how to explain this too well. I'm messing around with stylexp but I assume i'd need litestep to get this working, but what I want to do is have just a straight windows desktop with whatever theme, but I want to be able to make "containers" for the icons. I think the closest thing I can think of is that center bar on all the computers in an Apple store. I realize that that's OS X but I think its possible.

I did a ghetto solution and photoshopped a rounded square onto my background, but I'd rather not have to go in and extend it every time I added a new one.

is it possible? I just want to be able to create square container boxes and be able to change their size, color, and if i'm lucky, transparency. Almost like a layer in between the icons and background.

You mean like a quicklaunch? Explorer has the quicklaunch, but you can get some themes in Litestep that do this in the way you are saying too.

This theme is actually pretty sweet for litestep, I used it for a while. Everything hides away if you want to just view the desktop, and that bar at the top is where you'd keep your shortcuts.
