Windows Freezes on Boot

Juice Box

I recently screwed up my PSU on a mod and got another one for temporary use of the computer, The only prob is that it doesnt have a 12V connector on it. The comp booted to bios withough it so i figured it was okay, Now when i get to the XP loading screen, it freezes semi faded and will not completely boot. Im not sure if it has to do with the 12V or not, any advice>?

On safe mode, where does it get stuck at? The thing I'm surprised about is that it freezes, and doesn't shut off.

Lemme try on safe mode, but does anyone know of a retail store where i can buy a 12V converter from 4 pin molex? I need to get this running when i can.

I wouldn't run it without the auxiliary cable if I were you. That forces it to draw all its 12V through one wire instead of through three wires. Melting your mobo's ATX receptacle at the 12V pin would be no fun. Be careful.

So are you saying i should not buy that converter cause itll melt my mobo, and that this is the cause of windows not starting up properly?

You can go ahead and buy the molex adapter but I doubt this is the cause of the problem. First, is the replacement PSU on the same rating, wattage wise, as the old PSU? If the replacement has smaller watt rating then this could be the cause of the problem. If they have the same watt rating, then make sure the rail voltages are within specs. If the replacement PSU has smaller watt rating, try removing some of the add in cards for now and disconnect some hdd and drives except for the primary drive and then try again. If the system still would not boot properly, then it's not even PSU. Try doing a repair installation of the OS.

No no, I'm saying this:

1) your board is probably designed to power its CPU voltage circuits using the 12V lines from the PSU

2) with both the ATX and ATX12V lines plugged in, it would have three 12V wires to pull that power through (two on the ATX12V plus one on the main ATX)

3) with the ATX12V line absent, now the single 12V wire in the 20-pin ATX cable has to do the work of the missing two. Making one wire do the work of three is Not A Good Idea?.

I dont understand why windows doesnt boot up though, id think if it could get the power from that one, then it would boot up, what im trying to see is if its worth it to buy a new PSU right away only to find out its not the lack of a 12V plug at fault.

Can anybody tell me that if i get a new PSU with the right connectors, then Its safe to say windows will work correctly?

Well, since your problems started when you didn't plug the 12v in, it should.

Though freezing in the middle of Windows loading screen doesn't seem to be a power issue. Sounds something similar to the 'mup.sys' issue I had before.
