windows freezes during setup and boot

I tried installing windows on a friends computer. 98SE, 2K, and XP all froze during setup. They were all clean installs, hard drive was zapped and for 98, fdisked. Yanked his hdd out and plugged it in my rig and installed 2K just fine and didn't install any additional drivers. I put his hdd back in and during the black and white "starting windows" screen, the progress bar fills and then it freezes before the bootup bmp comes up. He was running ME beforehand. He has an Enermax PC (which went belly up months after he bought it) and I don't have all of his specs but to the best of my knowledge he's running:

1.0 Ghz Athlon
VIA KT266 mobo (might be an MSI, PCB is orange)
nVidia Riva
128 MB of PC133 RAM (I think)

Lost on what to do, any insight would be appreciated.

can I run this in 'dos'? I thought it might be RAM...currently looking for someone with 168 pin RAM to borrow from...thanks.
