Windows folder sharing dilema

Noo

Is there a way to have these 2 folders not showing up AT ALL as a shared folder to users who DO NOT have access right to it? I just want these folders to show up only to those who have access right to it.

Basically i want based on log in credentials, folders should appear or not appear based on access rights.

Under Advanced sharing you can set permissions to specific users. Also, you can share folders without actually using a Homegroup so if you are trying to lock things down you can disable much of that and simply share folders on an ad-hoc basis for whichever users you specify.

The first thing I do when sharing folders is restrict all access to everyone except me specifically. I believe it defaults to let "Everyone" see it.

I'm not using homegroup. And under advanced sharing, I removed the user but it still doesn't solve my problem. Removing the user access right to the folder still doesn't prevent the folder from showing up when they log in. The share folders will still show up, it's just when they try to access it, it's denied.

I want the folder to not show up altogether if they don't have access to it.

I googled it and it appears to be windows server specific, does windows 7 have this feature?

Ah see you didn't specify. I vaguely recall there is a tool out there that lets you change the flag on 7 to make it do the same thing.

You could also just convert them to administrative shares so they are not visible and you would have to do \\PC\$Music.

What's the difference between the $ being before vs after? I have one of the folder (file$) and it's hidden. What does the $ being before the folder name do?

Thanks iamgoon for the ABE. I'll set up a windows server with access based enumeration once I get my gigabit routers. Looks like at the best solution for my problem.
