Try This. I thought the same thing about Window's networking until I gave it a try. Makes the entire setup process extremely easy. It's just a beta at this point though. Not sure when the full version will be out.

In a room with a dozen of the most computer-knowledgable people I know IRL, we still cannot make Windows Networking work consistently and reliably.

Are you serious? Even my 5 year old nephew could put together a Windows network.

I thought the "making it work" part was implied?

Funny. Myself and two other guys manage to run a network of over 400+ switches, 20+ routers and 4000+ Windows hosts just fine. You guys suck! :D

windows networking has never worked right. Win2k seems to work the best though. They screwed it up again in XP by adding all that wizard crap.

Basically, the wired part of my network is performing flawlessly while the network part isn't cooperating.

This makes no sense. And frankly I also think this is a PEBCAC problem. I haven't had any problems running my network. Have 3 clients (soon to be 4) along with a linux fileserver/PDC.

Have you checked your firewall settings? Have you checked the crimps on your network cabling? What equipment are you running? How long are your cable runs?

I have set up a myriad networks, very familar with CCNA (took classes but never took the test), and yet my home network eludes me:(

Agreed. You do understand how IP addressing, DHCP, gateway IP addresses, etc. work, right? I mean it's not that difficult. Besides, it sounds to me more like you have a file sharing issue, not a networking issue, those are two wholly different things. Generally, if you can ping another host on the network, the networking part is done (with some notable exceptions of course and without host based firewalls in place).
