"Windows Features" is blank in Vista, even after "Sfc /scannow" & can't update to SP2

My Programs and Features>Windows Features window is completely blank, there is nothing listed (OS is Vista 64). I went to this support page and followed the directions, running command prompt as administrator and doing "Sfc /scannow". I get the message:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
However even after running this, there is no change - Windows Features is still blank.

I also can't update to SP2, which may or may not be related. I get the error:
Reached the end of the file.
Details: Error: ERROR_HANDLE_EOF(0x80070026)
After attempting this with automatic update, I manually downloaded the file Windows6.0-KB948465-X64.exe, but running that file gives me the same error as automatic update.

Anyone know what's happening here and what I might try to fix it?

You can try several things.

Corrupt system files can indicate the hard drive is going bad. Run Hitachi DFT to check the HD.

If DFT runs good issue a "CHKDSK /R" from a cmd window run as administrator to check the HD and repair file system if damaged.

After the above continually press PF8 while booting up to get to the Vista repair menu. You can either try the repair option or system restore back to a date when everything was running ok. I would try repair first then system restore.

I made the Hitachi DFT boot disk, but that didn't work - the computer just kept rebooting endlessly. So I found DFT was on the Ultimate Boot Disk, and used it from there - but it doesn't detect my SATA drives, only the PATA drive. Couldn't use DFT because of that. HD Tune shows no errors though.

From the repair menu I did the Startup repair (the computer was already starting fine so I don't know if this would have any effect), and also the memory test which passed. This didn't have any effect.

This issue is probably related to another thread I made a while back, Windows Media Player always crashes, which I never found the solution to. WMP still crashes always immediately after I try to open it up. System Restore isn't an option because the WMP issue is very old.

What else can I do to repair my install so that my Windows Features list is not blank, and WMP doesn't crash?

With all of those problems I would recommend reinstalling Vista. Backup your data first.
What brand and model PC do you have? Dell Dimension? Do you have a recovery disc or partition? Vista really does suck.

My PC is custom built, I built it using the hardware in my sig and with Vista 64. I used it for a couple years though, installing a bunch of programs and stuff.

I have extra hard drives that I could use to store backup images if I needed them, if that's what you are asking?

Is there any way to reinstall Vista and then automatically recover all my old programs that were installed? So that I don't have to install every program again. Or somehow have Vista intalled on top of my current install so that it just repairs it?
