Windows Explorer not working.

I am not sure whats causing this, Here is what its doing so far that I know of.

When I go to click on Windows explorer, It doesnt open.. Then when I click on the start menu after I tried to open windows explorer, The start menu doesnt expand and goes to a funny shade of gray... The just about everything else locks up:

I am using a Gateway P3 with windows 98 SE 512 MB Ram..

Any ideas ?

NOT sure what I did, But I went into SAFE MODE, Ran scandisk.. Rebooted.. All is working again

The system worked in the past, right? Anything changed? Maybe a virus attack or ???

I ran updated norton antivirus and found nothing, Also ran Spybot and CW antivirus but didnt find anything..

yes the PC was working pretty good..

Except when I was using Internet explorer bookmarks from my windows explorer. I would open windows explorer go to windows Then favorites and open bookmarks from there. sometimes I couldnt get some pages to close properly.. Sometimes I had to CTRL-ALT-Del and end task them.. But other than that it was working perfect..
