Windows Explorer- How to get .zip files not to show up?

on the left side of the windows explorer screen, if the directory has zip files, it displays them.

how do i get it not to display them?

Can you change Attributes under Properties to Hidden?

If you haven't installed any archiving programs, it's probably because it considers it a compressed folder. Try deleting the .zip extension in folder options.

well if i do that, will i still be able to unzip by just double clicking on the file?

Nope, you'll have to install a third party zip archiver.

Does this disable Compressed Folder support entirely, or just Explorer browsing?

It disables the Windows Explorer zip support, so yes, both.

That's unfortunate. I like the built-in zip support of XP, but I dislike the fact that Explorer displays zip files in the tree view. If you have a decent number of zip files in a particular folder, there is a significant delay that occurs when you browse to that folder in Explorer (I presume that Windows is prefetching the internal folder structures of the zip files). It would be nice if that particular portion of the integration could be disabled.

My workaround is to place zip files in their own sub-folder (i.e. avoid having multiple zips in the same folder).

I suppose you could just disable it and than use a 3rd party ZIP application. I usually install WinRar on my workstations because I like the right-click options...

Just use WinRAR or 7-zip. Both allow quick and easy archiving and unarchiving via Explorer context menu. 7-zip is quirky, WinRAR nags and has a poor (cluttered) UI. Or...use both 🙂

I agree.

The default WinXP behavior is alright, and IMO much better than WinZIP, but I prefer using WinRAR to manage all my archiving.
