Windows explorer dilemma

I am having a problem with my OS. Not entirely sure what happened to it but what resulted was that explorer.exe started taking 99-100% resource and the memory usage would vary from 40-80megs. The jumps in memory were 15-20 megs every second either up or down. The only way i could stop it is to end the explorer task and run another task. This has actually been posted more than once but a definitive answer has never been give. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Its hard to say really. Its probably a virus. What operating system and have you run adaware and done a virus scan with updated virus definitions?

I am running XP home. I have run Adaware and spybot. I ran norton last night with the updated definitions.
