Windows Explorer crashing when I open one specific folder

Here's the error report:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: xvid.ax
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0003d928

It's only when I open 1 folder within My Documents. All else seems to be working fine. No virus/spamware detected.

Any help is appreciated.

edit: Running XP Pro.

see what comes up there with a little red cross

Thanks. Looks like it's due to xvid. A few video files in that folder are xvid. Of course, I have no clue wht xvid is...

Here's what Events said for the errors:

Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 10.0.0.3646, faulting module xvid.ax, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0003d928.

Should I just go to xvid.org and install the latest of whatever it is?

xvid is for codecs [for playing audio or video].

I found this that might help:
http://forum.digital-digest.co...ive/topic/28432-1.html
and
http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread28867-1.html

Let us know what your path is, and whether it works for you please

I tried a few things but then found the solution in a doom9 forum thread:

start-->run and then type "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll"

No more avi thumbnails but at least Explorer doesn't crash. Strange thing is I didn't knowingly install a xvid codec (it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs so I can't uninstall it). If someone knows how to get the thumnails back with activating this xvid thingy, that'd be swell. 🙂

could go through the registry - make sure you back it up first.

or registry first aid
or found this:
"Try manually unregistering the DivX codecs from the command prompt.
Eg. regsvr32 /u divx_c32.ax (in the windows\system(32) folder)"

Hot damn, you da man!

I re-registered the shmedia.dll then unregistered the xvid.ax and presto. No more crashing and I can see the thumbnails.

Please have a tall glass of beer on me. 🙂
