my computer specs:

WD 7200 rpm 8meg buffer 160 gig hard drive (main)
Maxtor 7200 rpm 60 gig hard drive (secondary)
windows XP
512 MB ram (2 sticks of pc2100 ram)
geforce 2 ultra
turtle beach santa cruz
dfi motherboard

problem:

whenever i try to open a video file such as browsing through windows explorer and then clicking a video file (i don't even have to double click, it happens when i just click it once) windows explorer will freeze up and then explorer will crash and then reload so then all my systray icons are gone except a few.. this gets very annoying, after explorer crashes, i'll be able to open the video file again.. but like 10 min later if i try to open another video file, explorer will crash again. this happens to all video files - avi, mpeg, wmv (not quicktime though).. i tried doing the tweakXP thing where i delete part of the registry key so that it doesnt show the avi details but it still crashes because i dont think that was the problem..

thanks

I had the same problem but i was whenver i went into a folder with video files. My suggestion, Virus Scan or Re-Format. Virus scan probably wont work but it is worth a try. If what JonnyBlaze said doesnt work, i just reformatted...i know you may not want to so you can still search, but i just reformatted. good luck!

It could be a conflict with something running in the background. You can start off by killing all non essential apps running (control/alt/delete) to see if the problem goes away. If so, then comes the fun of killing one process at a time until you find the bad actor.

You can use freeware EndItAll to help you if you don't know what to kill and what not to:

EndItAll

search the registry for shmedia and erase any keys that point to it.

there will be one for each video file type.
