Windows Enterprise Edition

Today I bought the software bundle from my college which included a copy of Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise and what not. Ultimate will not be available until mid-September but Enterprise was available for me to download from the campus software server.

I had a few questions about Enterprise.

Right now it just says Enterprise-- how can I tell if I get 64-bit support?

Additionally, I am running XP Professional right now-- do you guys think I should upgrade. I don't game much anymore but mostly because of time constraints associated with College (Friends, Sports, Leadership training, School work). I am looking forward to playing a DX 10 game when it comes out-- does Enterprise still contain DX 10?

Finally, I know MatLab 2007 works- but outside of that I NEED to make sure Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2007 works correctly. Also will Pidgin, Skype, Firefox, Itunes, VLC-- Do they all work with Vista? Do I only have to worry about drivers not necessarily software?

Visual Studio 2005 works with Vista for anything I've done with it. But I'm just a beginning programmer, dabbling with C++ and C# here and there. Make sure you install SP1, plus a Vista specific update. Vista will tell you there are compat issues when you install it, and then Windows Update will download SP1 and the Vista update, so it's pretty seamless.

Firefox works, iTunes should work, although it had some issues last time I used it (a couple versions ago). Pretty sure Skype works, but I don't use it. Not sure about the others.

Vista Enterprise, I believe, is Vista Business with extra features (BitLocker, Unix subsystem, multi-language, VirtualOS). I use Pidgin, Firefox, and VLC just fine on Vista, and have used Skype in the past without issue; I have also helped people with iTunes, so they will all work. Drivers may be your largest problem, although application compatibility is somewhat lower on Vista x64 - I would certainly check ahead of time for your device drivers. You should be able to order 64-bit alternative media (or even buy it) and use the same key, as long as your version is considered retail (not OEM).

The main difference is that Enterprise is volume license only.

Well the enterprise edition is via my school (Virginia Tech) licensing agreement-- So I don't think I can order the 64 bit version. The Ultimate Edition will be delivered to me in September. If I remember right, I will have to uninstall Enterprise, Format, and Install Ultimate when that happens correct?
