Now that Easy Transfer is gone what's a good way to backup usernames before doing a clean install?

Guess File History? I heard that plus Sky Drive's auto backup?

I liked Easy Transfer as I could backup all user names on a drive and restore after a clean install within a few clicks....

SERIOUSLY? It's GONE?????? If true, that would confirm MS's off the chain desperation/urgency to stop the bleeding out re 8. Haste don only make waste.

That....is AMAZING, if it's not there!!!!

I luv it too, used it only once so far to migrate all I could form the system i just moved up from to this one I am now on. both running W7. I liked it a lot.

It's not gone. I just doubled checked both my upgrade from 8 to 8.1 and my clean install and it is there on both.

I hit search and type in Windows Easy and it popped up

or if you want you can hit start -> run type in migwiz and that will start it too

All Easy Transfer does is offer to restore previous backups made from previous versions of Windows! So 8 and below.

It will not offer to backup your Usernames & files like it did in previous versions.

So unless you have a backup from Windows 8 to XP. It's useless. They removed the backup function.

It's severely gimped to the point of useless in Windows 8.1.

That's because the idea with Win 8.1 (like it or not) is to have all that data synced to the cloud so that any PC you log into via your MS account will pull all that data with it.

I don't mind that. In fact I just backed up the user accounts with File History.

Just Easy Transfer seemed so damn simple with the few clicks just to back it all up and restore.

However I am going to start with clean usernames this time and bring Documents, Music & Pictures back. I noticed the images of the user names from Windows 7 would appear in the Usernames section but not when you logged out. Plus it may clear up any issues that could happen.

So not all is lost.... This will be more of a pain in the ass if someone needs me to do a clean re-install of 8.1. You know if they failed setup the auto sync/backup stuff.

R.I.P Windows Easy Transfer. :(

I feel U. Seems they are on a mess up roll fueled by desperation. Sales are already abysmal, but, when the major hardware Mfgs they cut deals with---and that comprises a big percentage of their revenue---start complaining re their sales, well, it won't be adorable.

I luved 7 the minute I got it---well, after I configured it-- and that has never changed.

You know, there are a coupla third party apps (but paid for) you can get to do what Windows Easy transfer does and even more!!!!

Hang in!!!!
