Windows Domain Server

When you are setting up a windows computer, it asks what domain server your computer should link to. What exactly is a domain server, and what does it do? What are the advantages/disadvantages of running one?

That's just for corporate networks. The domain controller contains your user accounts, passwords, login scripts, etc.

It's mainly for security. Along with your account is your security info - what resources you have rights to, etc. Without it, you'd have to have a unique local userid and password for every workstation you log into, every shared network resource you use (drives, proxy servers, email servers, etc.).
