Windows doesn't see ATA/66 drive!!

Puzzling problem here... About 3 years ago, when I built a new system, I gave my son my old PC. The HDD in it is a Maxtor 40GB ATA/66.

For some reason, his PC just won't bootup. I suspect a boot sector virus because he has been rediculously lax in updating his AV (about 3 months out of date)! So I figured I would install it in my system and thoroughly check it out.

I switched the jumper on the drive to slave and connected his Maxtor as a slave to one of my IDE (ATA/100) drives. My BIOS sees and reports the drive during startup, but Windows doesn't see it... What do you think is the problem?

I'm probably overlooking the obvious and will be damn embarrased when you guys set me straight, but whatever...
