Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection on all platforms

Elixer

That’s why today, we’re excited to announce three leading security companies – Bitdefender, Lookout, and Ziften – are partnering with us to enable Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) to detect, protect, and respond to security threats on macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android devices.

So, basically, it seems they are going to try to create a detection wall around all platforms to try and catch things quickly.
If this works, it will be pretty interesting, kinda like having a virustotal type thing going on.
I wonder how resource heavy this will be, and if the other AV guys will join in, and finally, I wonder what happens to the data that is scanned from people's machines?

It's still pretty much all definition-based which means nothing on stopping polymorphic malware. That's why I use Sandboxie. And I have the settings in Sandboxie pretty well tight. Not even an HTML5 cookie will stick around.

Same thing with what happens to the Win 10 keylogger data and other data. It gets categorized and easily referenced for NSA and/or marketing usage. 🙂

Well installing an antivirus on your phone is just about the dumbest thing you can possibly do so I'm not sure how it helps them there.

I only see this as a way to appease third-party AV (enterprise clients?) which have been on their way out the door for a while now. There's really no reason to use anything but Windows Defender at this point especially if you can use all the fancy new stuff on Windows 10. Otherwise you're just increasing your attack surface at that point.
