windows changing primary drive letters

For some reason my clean install of XP has assigned a backup drive as a system drive, and given is drive letter C. The disk manager tells me I can't change the drive letters of a system volume. Any way I can get this sucker to E: and get my boot (currently D? wtf?) to C?
 
I guess that brings up another question. Why is my storage drive labeled as a system drive, and C? Will I screw anything up if I change that? I care more about changing that than changing the boot from d to c.
 
It's labeled as a system drive likely because it has a swap file on it. Shouldn't hurt anything buttttt.... making the recommended backup is always a good idea.
 
The most reliable way to fix the drive letter issue is to remove all "unwanted" drives and re-install XP. After XP is installed on the "C:" drive, you can add your other drives.
 
if you have both IDE and SATA........
IDE drives are given first call on primary letters, then SATA
Have to disconnect IDE first, Load O/S on SATA prim active C, then IDE

If not, make your opticals Y and Z to make room to change letters in drive manager or Part Magic 8
