Windows - can't encrypt files/folders? System locks up

It's not a hard lockup a la RAM corruption or anything.. when I right click a file or folder and choose Properties, then click "Advanced" and try to encrypt, the Windows explorer shell locks up on me. I get the indefinite hourglass of doom.

Any reason why my OS chokes on this feature that is supposed to work?

How long does it 'lockup' for? Could it just be that its working on encrypting the files? Or are the files small and few? The encrypting process is run partly through explorer.exe.

Try it with a test folder with only a few simple files. It just may be one of those things that takes a long time to do.

When you get Encryption working, be sure to fully read up on how it works, how to recover your lost files when your hard drive fails, and have tested your ability to do a file recovery. EFS-encrypted files are NOT recoverable unless you've planned ahead.

Many people aren't aware that you can't recover EFS-encrypted files by simply re-installing your OS and entering your old UserName/Password.

The folder has one very small file in it (under 2KB). It locks up indefinitely.. I get the hourglass, and all windows are locked up. I have to do a hard reset.

And RebateMonger..thanks for the tip. I first learned that security roles don't carry over when I restored a bunch of files with a "preserve security" option, and the owner was some weird hexadecimal type number. 🙂
