Windows can't boot

Ok so i have this machine, athlon xp1900+ and a shuttle ak32.

Recently it started having trouble starting up....when i tried safe mode, it would get up to mup.sys and then rerstart. I read that going into the recovery console and disabling mup would solve the problem.. So i dig up my xp cd, and it won't boot from it. It will go as far as the screen "boot from ATAPI CD-ROM" and freeze. I have tried 3 different cd drives. What else would prevent me from booting from cd?

mmmm so when i take the cd out of the drive while its hanging, it will continue to boot...some seriously wrong issues with my cdrom?

Hi...

What channel is your CD-ROM hooked up to? Perhaps trying it on its own, as the master device, would help. Also check the jumper settings on your CD-ROM to ensure that everything is ok in that department. Could also be a bad cable, you never know. I'm assuming you have an original XP CD and not a backup copy.

well, i moved the cd drive to another machine and it works, so i've ruled out that its the hardware...and its running as master on the 2 channel....

and its not a sata drive.,
