Windows bootup problem

So the other day my pc got turned off unexpectedly, and when I went to turn it back on I received an error that a system file was corrupt and needed to be repaired. I figure no big deal, so I throw in the Windows install disk and restart. Once it turns back on, I have keyboard and mouse ( I can go into the bios and make changes), but as soon as it starts trying to boot up a device I lose power on my keyboard and mouse, so therefore I cant really do anything. Does it sound like I have a hardware failure or am I missing something here?

Specs:

Abit NV8 Socket 754 nForce4 motherboard
AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Palermo
Corsair ValueSelect 512 mb pc3200

Windows XP SP2
Relatively new hard drive (Seagate maybe 2 years old)

Are KB+Mouse both USB or PS2? Have you tried using accessories of the other type to see if you still have the issue?
