My friends computer will not boot up windows. It goes through the normal paces until it gets to the login screen where it is just a black screen except i get a mouse pointer. I've tried the Windows recovery on the CD that didn't work, and the files on the computer are very important and I really just need a way to transfer them to another computer via network if possible. (the computer was never set up for sharing or network) also i know its not a hardware because i took his HD and put it in my computer and it does the same thing.

As far as transferring the files, did you try hooking it up to your computer as a slave drive and getting the files that way? Unless the drive is dead/dying, the files can be saved to your drive or a CD-R.

Getting his computer back up and running (assuming no hardware issues) is probably going to mean formatting his drive and reinstalling Windows, which you wouldn't want to do before saving his data.

Good luck

Did you try booting into safe mode? What exactly did you run off the windows cd? Did you try a repair? Through the recovery console? It's likely not a hardware problem.

I tried safe mode, and the repair neither worked and i tried recovery console but every time I'd try to access something I would get a access denied even though he had no passwords on the computer. I haven't tried setting up a slave drive wtih it. I have tried to set up a slave drive before but its never worked before If can tell me exactly how to set that up that would be great. Also the HD doesn't have the jumper settings written on it so is there anywhere i can go to find that out? (its a Maxtor 20gig)

thanks

What you need to do is to put it in your computer and set it up as a drive other than the primary master making sure your computer boots off of your hard drive and then you should be able to explore his hard drive and burn cds with the data.
