Windows auto installing drivers during driver update process

Is it really necessary to disable windows automatic driver installation? I noticed that even during the AMD driver installation process, windows is so fast at it that it will reinstall the drivers that the installation program uninstalled before you get to install the new drivers.

Obviously a small percentage of people out there are expected to tweak stock settings of Windows (I have windows 7), so I can't imagine that it is really all that necessary to have a complete wipe and fresh install.

So any verdict on this? I prefer to leave auto install on since that would likely be easier for various USB devices.

Personally, I have update set to notify me when updates are available, and let me choose what to install. I never ever let Windows update install hardware drivers. I always always get them directly from the manufacturer. This is best practice.

According to the rumors, Win 10 won't give us a choice about the updates. It will automatically update everything. It's very horrible. Why i'm thinking of this way? Because i remember the infamous NVIDIA 320.18 driver. It damaged some GPUs. Imagine: A new GPU murderer will be released, Windows's gonna download and install w/o your permission. Then boom! The vertical lines on the screen. Say goodbye to your card.

Yes, maybe it's a very worst case scenario but it's a possibility and if Win 10 will behave like this(restrict our freedom)I'm not gonna welcome it.

Windows does not install new drivers for your system. They only install a driver if none is installed. I do not believe they will even download drivers, they will simply try to install what ever it has available on your system.

Just let it install the driver then install the ones you want, and you should be ok.

Home edition will autoinstall drivers, apps updates and so on without any ability to turn it off. Including OS upgrades.

Only Pro and Enterprise got some control it seems.

Patch tuesday is also gone. Its patches anytime, anywhere.

You can turn drivers off; that said, a lot of drivers including a base video driver are included in the build. It could be just using the built in driver (that's what I see it do?)

I do driver installs offline with AV turned off as well. I also have Windows set to only notify me, not install automatically.

Seems like the right compromise. Users who don't care enough to update won't figure it out.

Win10 is the same as Win8 for enabling/disabling automatic driver updates.

Search for system[control panel], system protection, hardware tab, device installation settings.

A newer Win10 AMD driver was released a couple days ago. It's not available from AMD directly. It has many bug fixes compared to 15.7, but some people are having issues. I am waiting to see if AMD beta drivers or MS pushed drivers are more frequently released.

I've had two drivers come through for Nvidia. One had a pesky cursor issue other fixed it. Will disable that feature once win 10 is official

This could be a hassle when removing old drivers before updating to new ones, but the solution is simple. Download the new drivers and then disable your Internet connection before removing the old drivers. Windows can't auto-install drivers if it can't obtain them through the Internet!
