I can?t fix this issue and it?s really pi**ing me off!!!

When I delete a large amount of files either from the recycle bin or directly (recycle bin turned off) Windows hangs.

The mouse still works but all screen updates just freeze. Then, after a long pause that varies in length from seconds to minutes, the whole system jumps back to life.

This happens on both windows 98 and ME.

Now, here is what I?ve tried:

Checked IRQs/resources ? no conflicts.

Tried installing windows 98 and ME fresh with all my cards removed.

Tried swapping UDMA cables.

Tried different hard drives one at a time on IDE 1.

Still I have this darn problem!! This never happened on my older computers. Anyone else have a similar issue?

Seems to me there is a subtle problem with Windows 9X and modern DDR motherboards as others have had this issue. Can't believe it's not a recognised problem, however you'll only notice this if you delete large numbers of files often.

Will updating my OS fix this problem?

I had a similar problem like that when I was running in 98 and was backing up a lot of files (ie moving large amounts of data from one drive to another). After it finished moving to a new location my system would hang, mouse pointer would respond but nothing else. I apparantly never waited long enough for it to come back.

Really no Idea why it's happening to you, but I think it could be more related to the OS than your hardware.

As far as updating, I've yet to experience the same affect in win2k or winxp.

What I think is happening is your OS is looking for the missing files you have either deleted or moved to another location. Windows keeps looking for those files and while doing that appears to have crashed but has not. I do not believe it is a fault in Windows that is your problem.

Whenever deleting any Windows programs or files use a program like Norton Utilities Clean Sweep. After that run Norton's WinDoctor to clean out the Registry. It also fixes orphaned files so Windows won't keep looking for them.
