Windows 9x, 2k, ME or XP : which one best for PC gaming

hai guys out there...
first of all i'm so sorry if my english suck...i just try my best then...

i really need expert opinions on this topic coz i always had problems to run 3D games..
even after i installed the latest driver, my game still not running smoothly especially with high graphic setting(even sometime with medium & low graphic setting)...
i still can play the game but it's not on its best performance...
i'm not sure whether my PC spec is low for the current 3D games...
but some people said my current OS is not suitable for PC Gaming...is that true?

for your information this is my PC spec:

OS Windows XP service pack 2
Pentium 4 1.7Ghz
I'm not sure bout my motherboard since it's HP based PC (Vectra VL420)
Maxtor ATA 40GB Hdisk
512 SDRAM
Asus V9520 Magic Geforce FX5200 8x (but my AGP slot only support 4x)
Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1

Your problems have less to do with your OS and more to do with your hardware. A 1.7 GHz processor and GeForce FX 5200 graphics card will not cut it for running the latest and greatest (Doom 3, HL2, etc.) at high quality settings. Stick with XP, since that's what you have; it's the best suited OS for modern hardware.

Its probably more to do with your hardware than the OS.

A P4 1.7 with SDRAM and a 5200FX aren't really gonna cut it with the latest games

Those early P4's were a POS, and coupled with SDRAM crippled them even more.

If at all possible, get a better motherboard, cpu, video card and DDR memory. An AthlonXP cpu would probably be the best bang for the buck, but if you can afford it, then the Athlon64's are probably the best for games at the moment.

Also check your PC for spyware (use Ad-aware, spybot etc) and viruses as well as those can slow down the performance of a PC.

Try and find out the chipset on your motherboard and make sure the latest drivers are installed.

On a brighter note, your English is pretty good.

You should use WinXP simply because some games might not run in (or at least is not optimized for) earlier versions of windows.

Over on Ars Technica a few months ago, one of the guys on their forum ran a slew of identical game benchmarks under 98, ME, 2K, and XP. His benchmarks showed that XP was consistently better for getting the best performance from games.

However, MrChad above is correct. Your hardware is more of a factor than the OS, particularly that FX5200. A faster processor and new video card would do more for your gaming than using another OS.

I don't know which one is "best" for gaming, but if you pick W2K or XP, stop by the Black Viper's Web Site. He has a couple of pages on which services can or should be shut off for gaming.
I would be VERY careful about disabling services, it's generaly more headach then it's worth. If you insist on changing services don't follow that site's advice, he doesn't give you enough information abou the services to make an informed decision.

At the very least set them to manual, not disabled.

Troubleshooting when a dependant service isn't starting is often a PIA.

There have been several popular sites (ars technica, toms hardware guide, etc.) that have show XP/2K to be as fast or faster than 9x simply because the OS is better able to take advantage of the hardware.

However as has already been stated it's going to be 95+% dependant on your hardware; if you want the game to run faster it's time to upgrade your CPU/GPU.

Also I second Phoenix86's post. It's very dangerous to just go and disable services unless you know exactly what they do and how they interact with eachother and your running applications.

.

Would you be so kind as to provide a link?

I've searched over there and can't find it.

This w/b SURPRISING news to me, unless we're talking about .5 of FPS

I researched this to death over the past year, and have never found this assertion (XP being faster) to be proven true.

Thanks,

Fern

Use Win3.1 and a Trident 512KB ISA VGA card - they are the ultimate for gaming!

...Why are you all looking at me funny? Didn't you all buy Windows' PCs, specifically to play Solitare, the hands-down most popular Windows game ever???

😉
