I have an Abit KA7 + Athlon 700. Running Win 98 Se. About 90% of the time windows will not shut down. The screen will simply go blank and the computer will not shut off. When I boot up again, it has to scan the disks every time due to not shutting down. I had this problem before upgradeing to SE, and it still persists. I also installed a Win 98 SE fix called the Win98SE Shutdown Suppliment. The computer shut sown properly once or twice after the installation, but then returned to it's disfunction. I've reinstalled, and had the same results again.

Go to msconfig----> General--->Advanced--->Be sure fast shutdown is disabled. And, my vid card drivers were at one point in time my issue... Good luck...

If your disable fast shutdown is activated and you still have problems , you could try going into your registry and localmachine/software/micros'/windows/run and run once. In there you can try to delete the load power profiles. this seems to help. If you are antsy about deleting in the registry , from msconfig/startup- you can prevent the loading of the power profiles << hope this helps you out :)

Thank you all for the replies. I forgot to mention in the first message that before trying the microsoft fix, i had allready disabled fast shutdown, and made sure all my drivers were up to date. (my video card is a sorry Jaton using the Cirruss Logic 5464 laguna chip, and the latest drivers are a bit old...) I now have tried the mapped drives shutdown update, and removing the power profiles from the msconfig. No luck yet.

I have found that many conflicts will cause win98 to fail to shut down..USB is one that comes up alot. IM hoping WinME will cure a lot of that.

Grass, now that I think about it, yes. I have yet to reformat my drive and reinstall windows yet, and I do have PC Cillin installed and running on it. I only upgraded the mobo+chip, and that's when this began. I'm still in the process of backing up the rediculous amount of crap on my drive onto CD-R (a 2speed to boot. slow eh). Untill I finish that, I can't yet start from scratch yet. But I plan to.

Mastertech, do you think dissabling all the board devices that I don't use could be a possible solution ?(I don't use USB, or AGP [not yet at least])

It couldnt hurt, though that fresh install would be good too... Check for IRQ conflicts as well. Most of the USB problems I had were while using USB periferals so you may not see that problem. And if you overclock that in itself may cause errors as well. Sounds like you are up for a lot of trial and error. I trust you have done the latest Bios flash as well. Good luck.

Sorry for intruding on the thread cucumber..

BTW: when I installed the shutdown patch it never worked for the first week or two then no more shutdown problems.. Weird but maybe yours will be the same. (Windoze seems to have a mind of its own ?)

Evolution, i'm thinking that spre is probably right. I don't have an up to date virus program, so my scans are a bit useless. If this problem started after a long time of running fine for you, it sounds very virus like to me. Installing the MS shutdown fix removes the fast shutdown section from the msconfig, so that's probably why it's missing. I haven't done it yet, but reformatting the drive, and reinstalling windows may be the answer. I'll be sure to let you know if this works for me.

Actually...my previous post is wrong. Make sure Disable Fast Shutdown is off. So you have Fast Shutdown on. So the box in Msconfig should be off.
