I dug out one of my ancient old Emachines systems from the garage (a 533mhz) and wanted to reinstall win98se on it for my small kids to start using with some educational school games ect. After installing the basic win 98se, i get it hooked up to my network and go to the win update page and..... its gone!

Says windows 98 Update Error, cannot display the requested page. I know MS has stopped updating win98 but why dont they allow us to d/l atleast the old crit updates ect?

Are there any sites out there that might have all the old win98se updates in like a bundled "service pack" type file that i can excecute and just update win98se to most current??

Is win98 totally dead now? I refuse to run a system on my network with ZERO crit updates on it.. thats like a walking zombie, just begging for security problems.

HELP :)

The old updates should still be accessible, but I think the default location has moved... try going manually to 'windowsupdate.microsoft.com' in an IE window and see if that works.

With Windows 98, you'll have to first update your browser. You should then be able to return to the Windows Update page and do the other updates.

Or get a copy of Win2k and throw it on that machine. At least Win2k will run on a 533Mhz, and its NT based so it is stable.

That can be a huge download or interactive upgrade on any but a fast broadband connection (I know, since I performed a clean reinstall of Win98se recently, and all I have is dial-up). But AOL sends CD's out with IE on them, that simplifies things if you know about IE being there (I didn't).

In the past, Microsoft has offered a free CD that contained all updates for Windows 98 and later operating systems through Spring, 2004. I don't know if they still offer it.

Although I did obtain that CD while it was available (no longer offered), it is specifically security stuff (AFAIK, it doesn't include XP's SP2), and there's much more available (still) from MS Update. The reason I downloaded the IE upgrade was because I'd managed to temporarily mislay my copy of the security CD (and now I've found that the same thing is true for the XP SP2 CD-- my sometimes chaotic disorganization in the computer room gets me in a lot of trouble on occasion).

P.S. MS announced a changed end-date for supporting Win98, long before the last proposed end-date (originally some date in 2004, as I recall now) ever arrived, at least to the extent that it supports it now, which finally stops as of June something, 2006.

"End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me
Published: January 6, 2006 | Updated: February 16, 2006

July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site. This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible."
