Is there away to create a new Windows 98 SE disk with all the updates included. I need to reinstall Windows 98 SE on someones computer, but they only have dialup and I don't want to wait for everything to download through dialup.

There is an "unofficial" service pack for 98SE. I don't think you can slipstream it, but it's only a 12MB download (it doesn't contain IE6, however).

Yeah I couldn't find anything about slipstreaming 98SE, so I wasn't sure. Has anyone used this unofficial service pack and does windows update have any problems after you install it? Also can I download IE6 with its updates somewhere. I assume IE 5.? that comes with 98SE has a few security holes in it and IE6 would be better.

Why not just put Windows 2000 on it?
Any computer that can run Win98, -should- be able to run Win2k no problem.

Actually, 98 had wider support for older hardware. Windows 2000 wasn't quite as bad as NT4 in this respect, but not nearly as good as XP. So there is a lot of late 1990s hardware that will run on 98 but not 2000.

Mostly true IF you got >64Mb RAM. I installed W2K on a machine with 64Mb and it was horrible. Upgraded to 192Mb and it ran like a dream. :p

That person does not have W2K only 98SE, so I cannot install it. It is only a K6-2 something anyway and it probly has less than 64megs of ram.

Thanks, that does have IE6 either, but I found a way to download it. Has anyone used either of the unofficial 98SE service packs?

Some people posted their experiences with it in this thread.

I have used the unofficial win98SE update ver 1.5.1 on three machines; a k63+450, a 466 Dell Celeron, and a 700 Athlon. I updated these (after removal of 1.5.1) to 1.6.2 and overall usb2.0 even works well(when added to these old machines for card readers) . Some use IE5x, and one uses IE6x.

The only bug I found is that when a dialup connection is established , it will sometimes leave a blank box in the task bar, which when clicked on disapears. This has not caused any noted problem.
