you need the two patches needed to resolve the shutdown issue. check this site, there are about 20 of these questions every month.

do a search.

under syetem tools in the start menu, go to system information, click on tools and then system config utility then click on the advanced tab, then click on diable fast shutdown. This also seems to help, although WIN98se has patches out as mentioned

DAM,
what words did you use for your search I used (windows 98se shutdown prolems) and came up with zero results.Maybe I am doing the search wrong.

Creedog,
after installing the windows patch it removes the disable fast shutdown.

Rajk,
thanks nice windows site deffinetly one to book mark.

I went into my bios and enabled some settings under power manegment
then I changed some setting under MSCONFIG - reactivtaed start up items
and now windows shuts down thanks again

when you search, don't be that specific. And also, how did you come up with WinME posts with that search? I would think you should use Win98 and shutdown to search.

The fast shutdown doesnt cause alot of hanging problems. What that is is that if you have a fast proccessor (800+) and etc..the computer shuts down before the OS has a chance to write things it still has on the memory to the hardrive and dataloss occurs.
