Windows 98SE or WindowsMe?

I'm building a new system and I wasn't sure what version of Windows I should go with. I cannot afford a dual-OS setup, so it can only be one version of Windows. Should I go with 98SE or Me?

Thanks.

There really isn't too much difference between the two.. I like winME because I find it boots faster and it has updated software and driver support.. but thats about it.. You could also always get win98 SE and buy the ME upgrade for half cheap.

My roommate has had really bad experiences with WinME. And for my part I hate some of the "features" it offers, though I haven't used it on my machine. I find Win98SE runs great, rarely crashes, no compatibilty problems, etc. And I've of the mind if it ain't broke don't fix it, so I have no intent to move to WinME.

Win2000 and Whistler (whistlers not available yet) are a fairly major upgrade over Win9x so you might consider those. But I'm quite happy with Win98SE and so I have no desire to move to WinME not much of an upgrade really.

in my experiences definitely go with 98SE. I wouldn't go back to WinME untill they release an SE edition. I liked the better driver base and fast boot up. Hoever i probably had to reboot 3x as often. There are a few threads on this on the Operating Systems board

i have winme installed in my all my comps. i love the bootup time [20~30 seconds]. i've had several bad experiences with winme though. they were:

1. crashing while playing counter-strike which screwed up my graphics settings. i was forced to reformat because even trying to reinstall winme, i couldn't see sh!t. that really pissed me off

2. i hate windows media player 7, it's slow, i can't uninstall it

3. the time it takes to load programs and do...stuff...seems a bit slower than running on win98se

the reason i'm using winme in all my systems are because it's great for networking for the house. also i have a tendency to restart a lot because my system resources run low and it only takes a short time to do so. the other reason i'm staying with winme is that it's the newest product from microsoft and i want a new look and to keep up to date in their OS.

i think the reason why my comp crashed that time [graphics] was because of detonator 3...heard bad comments on it...maybe not, i dunno.

Like Noriaki and most of the others, my nod goes to Win98. If you go Win98SE I would recommend the "full" version and a "clean install" rather than the "Upgrade Second Edition" on top of an exhisting Win98FE.

ME works great for me. The only bone I have to pick with it is.....

MEDIA PLAYER 7 LICKS B@LLz. IT SUCKS YET MICROSOFT PUTS 4 SHORTCUTS FOR IT ONCE YOU INSTALLED ME. (1 in startup bar, 2 in start/programs menu, 1 on desktop)

die.

<<<<<<<<<< correcting self

You are building a "new" system so you obviously will be doing a "clean install" of something, lol. So my comment about that is moot.

That ones easy, Windows 98 SE. I just bought a new system and was eager to get Windoze ME partly because it has a simular look in feel to Windoze 2000. Anyway this is how it went a all the places I got quotes from

Sale droid - What operating system would you like?

Me - Windows ME

Sales droid - No really what operating system would you like?

Me - Didn't I say Windows ME

Sales droid - Trust me Sir you don't want that. We have had a lot of problems with it.

Me - Windows 98 please

Sales droid - Excellent choice. Would you like fries with that?

Anyways I'm happy so far. Get Windoze 98 SE now and upgrade to the next version which should have all the functionality of Windows 2000. To bad Windows 2000 still isn't a viable platform for gamers. I think it's the first Microsoft operating system that I actually like.

i see by your post that you have broadband hook up, in that case go with WinME. i had win98se and switched to WinME with cable modem connection and seen improvement in that area.

Well I guess someone has to disagree... I like ME. I had win 98 and win98SE, and am now using ME. The Restore feature saved me a headache once, and It just seems to feel more solid than 98. (not that I had any problems with 98) I now can go days without a reboot, win 98 would do a day or so and then sloooooow down. It you're on dial up, you can save a bunch of time not needing all the updates 98 does.

I really don't use media player, so I can't comment on that.

WinME is everything bad about Win98 and media player but with a better interface. It loves crashing and giving errors (moreso than Win98, IME). Win98SE or Win2k would be far better choices.

I'm just wondering if there is any gaming difference between the two? I have always had ME on my new computer, haven't tried 98SE on it yet.. just wondering if I would see any difference in games at all? has anyone done benchmarks on this?
