Windows 98se ... and a 2nd HD

Ok I use Windows 2000 most of the time but my GF has a PC with 98se on it and for some reason I can't get windows to recognize the 2nd HD I installed the other day.

Details:

IDE 1

Primary HD is a Maxtor 40gb
Slave HD is a Maxtor 30 gb

IDE 2

Primary is a TDK DVD-RW
Slave is a Pioneer DVD ROM

Everything checks out on the BIOS and I double checked the jumpers on the devices just to make sure and they are all good and right. Then I checked the cables both are ATA133 and Master and slave are on the right plug ... Master being the last plug slave being the 1st if I am remembering correct.

Boot up check BIOS .... all good drives are recognized and in the right order.

Boot windows 98se and only the Master HD and the 2 DVD drives come up in my computer. So I was thinking maybe the cables are bad but then why would the drive show in the BIOS fine and not in Windows?

anyone got ideas?

thanks.

nope I didn't try IDE 2 with the 2nd HD ... I will when I get home ...

and I don't think Add/Remive Hardware will work .... but I never thought of that ... can it be done liek that?

Fdisk does not see the drive? Was the drive bare? Did it come from a system where it was formatted with a different OS previously? (Linux or XP)

Haven't used 98 in awhile, but this always worked for me:
1)Create a 98 boot floppy disk from Windows.
2) Boot from the Floppy disk.
3) Run Fdisk from the Dos prompt and create the partition on the unformatted drive
4) reboot with the floppy
5) Run Format from the A: prompt
6) Reboot from HD - Second HD should be accessible.
