Windows 98se and 1GB of ram

Okay, awhile back, Thugsrook gave me a link to an thread he had written over at Bleeding Edge giving all of the details of how to use 1GB of ram with Windows 98/se. Now that my ram has come in, BE won't let me access the page! And it was no problem to access before. They've recently "updated" their forums, just like AT. Anyway, the only info I could find anywhere (besides that it isn't possible;)) was to change my Windows' system.ini file to: MinFileCache=65536, MaxFileCache=65536. Is that correct, and is there anything else I have to do to be able to use 1GB in Windows 98se? His thread was pretty long, over at Bleeding Edge, and I did download all of the files he recommended to download (updated sytem files, it seems). Do you guys know of anything else? I've already PM'ed Thugs, but he hasn't responded yet. Thanks in advance.

Thank you. Now when it says not to use any "custom tweaks", what all applies to that category. I use
X-Setup by Xteq Systems to make quite a few changes that I'm not sure if I could live without (like it can force Windows to use all of the ram before it even makes a page file, which is very, very useful). Would that apply to it? (It's alot like Tweak UI, but about 10x better.)

custom tweaks = no other msdos.sys or system.ini tweaks, no other vcache or swap file tweaks.

those programs you mentioned are ok to use.
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 is a bad idea (i thoroughly tested it)

:)

ConserveSwapFileUsage=1 is not a bad idea if you have enough RAM. I use WinME for some older games on my system with 1GB RAM and I set this option to 1 in the system.ini. I get no disk thrashing, during or outside of games, I monitored my memory situation carefullly and the memory usage never goes above 512MB under ME so this option is viable. Under XP I do video encoding so that is why I have so much RAM in my system. I also like playing FarCry

Thanks, Thugs, you've been a life saver. I didn't want to have to send that ram back for 2x256!;) I'll be doing it in about an hour, I guess, but first I'm going to try installing the DFI motherboard on my daughter's system, since she's getting a new motherboard either way. I don't want to have to get rid of my new install of Windows, unless that board and ram can do 220fsb or better.;)

just to be clear...

you can try and run some of the usual Win9x tweaks if ya want, but let me assure you that they are all worthless when running a modern P4 rig with 1gb of ram.

ive seen actual usage upto 991mb (physical) in Win98se, so it can use as much as it needs.... when needed ;) :)
