There is an unofficial service pack floating around on the internet someplace..

Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98. I believe even the extended "pay as you go" support has ended as well

oh yeah.. get ready for Link19 to jump right in this thread and flame you because you are still using Windows 98.
He/she/it will go on to quote "Windows 98 is a POS operating system that should have died long time ago. Windows XP is so superior to Windows 98 that if you still use Windows 98, you are stupid and worthless and don't have a clue"..

Pretty much something along those lines :)

I sure hope no one uses POS Windows 98 on a modern system for running post 2001 software. That would be a huge mistake

Its a client system, not much we can do. It crash and cant afford something else. So reinstalled it and went to windows update and it gave an error.

Did some google search. Some guy said he fixed the problem by installing IE6. We are currently doing that, lets see what happens.

Problem fixed.
Installing IE 6 let us do the updates.

Hehe, I just set up Dos 6.2 and Windows 3.11 on an unused 3ghz P4 system just for the hell of it. Duke Nukem 3d never looked so good!

That is awesome.

On my previous P4 2.0 Ghz rig, I set up DOS 6.22 and installed Arachne and got on the internet with it.

That's ok because it is only used for running legacy software. But it would be stupid to use Windows 98 for running modern games and software!! Modern games and software should be for native Windows NT based operating systems only!!

Has anyone tried out the unofficial 'service pack' for Windows 98SE? My dad has an old PIII laptop with 98SE on it and I was wondering if it might be worth it to install it.

It didn't cause any harm when I tried it on an older Pentium machine. I believe they have a list of bugs that happen with it. You might read their faq.
