Windows 98: system resources running dangerously low!

firstly what are classified as resources in windows? and what can i do generally to increase the amount of resources i have so that i stop seeing that irritating warning?

i am running a C400 @ 540, 256 mb ram, a 10 gb primary hdd and a 20 gb secondary hdd.

I think you get that message when primarily you are running low on memory, but this is not YOUR case.

When do you get this message (multi-tasking, gaming,....)?

What programs are you running in the "background"?

i usually get them when having like 5 IE windows open, running eudora, icq, winamp, and napster. i don't have much TSRs. i only have the task scheduler, a palm sync manager and icq in my taskbar.

Uh, I don't any problems. How much stuff do you have on your hard drives? Have you used some of the MS Resource Meter or System Monitor? System monitor may narrow down a program that is using up your resources.

hm... i havent used resource meter or system monitor before. are these programs also capable of freeing up resources after an application is closed? if i am not wrong windows is rather poor in handling resources, and resources being used by an application do not get freed even after the application is closed.

Go into accessories, into system tools to find.

These utilities are to MONITOR you system and may show you that one of your applications is eating up all of your resources! Then you can either update the program OR not use it so often.

Go to start/run type in msinfo32 and enter, this will tell you which programs are running in the background, and lot of other info.You can also enter msconfig in the same field.Chose"selective startup,run sys ini.,and run win ini. boxes only.Then apply,with this still open go to startup tab,select system tray and scan registry and any antivirus related check boxes,apply and reboot,this will solve the problem.
