Windows 98 Slows down after long hours...

Hi all, it's me again :)

I have another problem... it seems that if i leave the computer on for a long period of time (around 24 hours), it becomes really slow, the mouse moves in sectors instead of smoothly :) and all over very slow and prone to a crash. Does anyone have a clue why this might happen. I could understand it happening on a crappy CPU with no ram, but as i'm using a rather half decent system, it should run fine. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and how to fix it would be greatly appreciate!

Thanks!

win9x are rather lousy at resource and memory management. after applications closed the resources and memory that they have been using do not get freed up at all. so the longer time you run windows without shutting it down, the less resources you have left. restart your windows often!

I had my box on all weekend, and I never detected a loss in speed. I'm running Win98 with 256MB of RAM and a PII-450 on a 440BX mobo. I ran everything from WinAmp to IE5 to PhotoShop to PowerPoint.

Are you running 98 SE? Big improvements over origional release of 98.

Also, consider another OS. Linux is faster, more stable, and has better memory management. I boot to 98 only for games. Might not have to do that for too much longer, as WINE (a windows emulator for Linux) now has some experimental support for Direct3D.

You must be running software with a serious memory leak. I have never seen Windows itself slow down noticeably but only games.

Try emptying your Temp Internet Files folder. Defrag your hard drive. Make sure you have plenty of Swap File space.

What's with you Win2k birds? You need reassurances from your daddy or what? OK, Win2k is great, and you were soooo smart to choose it. Now can we get on with trying to help people that are not as good looking, personable and smart as you.

if you are insisting on not rebooting, you could go to www.download.com and download a program called memturbo II. this program allows you to recover your resources and as they say "will feel like you just rebooted your computer". it is a nice little program. use it all the time now.

Hehe I've got a 98SE system that now has over 31 days of uptime :)

What are the specs on your system and what programs are constantly running in the system tray?

Ok, my specs are AMD 850 Tbird 192mb RAM

In my system tray i have ICQ (sometimes), Dial up network thing, Sound control, and the hardware so that i can use the "special" buttons on Microsofts internet keyboard and mouse. I also run a RAM hungry chess playing program on the net (the more RAM you have, the better it searches moves...) But that's about 50% of the reason why i have it on. I've seen many computers having them running for 600 hours....

Also, i was wondering if these memory leaks could have caused constant freezes? My computer freezes quite often (every 4-5 hours) or when i have a few programs up. Do you think that could be the case? I've installed memturbo II as you said NivekC4, and i'll see if that stops the slow computer and the freezes! I'll keep you guys updated if there are any more crashes. As i am on a LAN, i found it difficult to screw around with Win2k to make it work. I've been using Win98SE for a long time now and know how to set up the LAN. :) If you guys know a site that tells me how to set up a LAN on win2k that'd help me out a lot! Thanks!

They where only pointing out that Win98 is the cause, and that Win2K is a good option if you want to leave your PC on for long periods of time.... Calm Down man.
