I just installed windows 98 on a laptop, but when I attempt to shut it dow it just hangs. I have downloaded the latest patches from MS website, but it still hangs. What can I do to fix this issue.

Most of the shutdown hangs I've seen in Win98 / Win98SE were caused by driver issues. I suppose you could check to see if you have the latest ones, especially video drivers, installed. Also, you might consider what concurrent apps / utilities you have running. Some of those can cause a hang at shutdown. The most likely suspects are Adobe Type Manager, old version of Pretty Good Privacy and some anti-virus software. (Sometimes it's just a particular setting on the anti-virus software that causes such issues.)

Hope you get it sorted out.

Regards,
Jim

BTW, if this is an older laptop that came with Win95 you may have trouble getting the device driver updates you need to make it work with Win98. Since devices are integrated into the motherboard design on laptops, you usually have to depend on the laptop vendor, rather than the device maker, to supply you with updated drivers. It's a perennial problem for laptop / notebook users.

This is a Trogon laptop, AMD 400 processor, and it came with windows 98 preinstalled. I loaded all the original drivers that came with it, It was working before I re-installed everything.

Hi,

That's weird! I've had just the opposite experience. Since the advent of Win98, I've never seen an OEM install on a laptop where all of the Power Management features were working. But a clean reinstall always seems to straighten things out. My experience has been limited to Dell, IBM and Toshiba portables, though. I never heard of "Trogon". Is this SE or the first Win98?

Regards,
Jim

I'm sorry. That one's got me stumped. As I said, my limited repertoire under these particular circumstances is to suggest looking for the latest drivers -- and BIOS updates, too. (The ones most machines ship with are not the latest available.) I haven't run into a recent machine that I couldn't get to behave properly under these circumstances.

I'm gonna stay tuned in case someone else comes up with something.

Best regards,
Jim
