I have several windows 98 machines on a network. Each one has their entire C drive shared on the network with the password "12345". Windows 7 cannot access them. I've tried every combination of user name and password I could think of and it just wont access them. But it can see them on the network. I've gotten around this problem in the past by simply not talking to them with a vista/7 machine. But obviously that isnt going to work for much longer. Has anyone solved this problem?

Update the old as hell 98 machines.

lol they are still running .vxd type device drivers for ISA hardware. They dont even have a complete set of XP (NT) drivers, let alone anything for vista/7.

As mentioned, the long-term solution is to get rid of them. In the short-term, you'll probably need to go into the Win7 local security policies and disable or make optional some/most of the network security variables.

Nothinman pretty much nailed it.

on win7 box start => run => gpedit.msc

expand computer configuration -> expand windows settings -> expand security settings -> expand local policies -> security options -> set Network security:LANman authentication level: send lm and ntlm.

remember, setting these to lm and ntlm, increases your risk exposure.
