Windows 98 SE - Need help really fast please.

I've lost my serial number (was on the CD Case) for Windows 98 SE. It's somwhere around the house but I can't seem to find it.

Is there anyway I can retreive the Win98SE serial from Windows? I have to format this HD because there's a lot of bugs but I need the key during the installation. If there's someone who knows how to retrieve the key from my Win then please reply or PM me.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to retrieve the CD-key. If you registered the software with Microsoft you could call them and get a key. I had a customer do this about a year ago when they decide that they needed to run Partition Magic without checking with me first. Microsoft gave them an install key after they verified thier identity and registration info. The customer did have thier product ID code written down though. Good Luck.

i used to do that... you can get it... lets see if i remeber how to do it...

i dont have a win98 box around to check this... so this is the best i can remember, i hope i dont get any of the details wrong...

you open up c:\windows\system.dat in a text editor of some sort... just be careful never to save anything there, its part of your regstry files.

use a Find command and search for "productid" and you should find it... or it might have been something other than productid ... maybe productkey? hmmm but i know it stores it in there in win 98, i used to pull it out to use for reinstalls for customers that had lost their numbers and just had the CD.... but i dont do that type of peon work anymore

This is a 2nd way I found the key:

Go to "start"/"run" type in regedit

While in your registry, go to "Edit"/"Find"

Type in ProductKey and press "Enter".

That's it. Once again, thanks for your help .

Run regedit.

Find this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

In the right-hand column, look for ProductKey.

Next to it is your registration key code.

Yep, it's in the registry. Even WinNT is in the registry.
