Windows 98 SE memory issues...

Hi,I have windows 98 SE installed and 384 MB of RAM however I run out of memory frequently...since there is plenty of memory in my PC it must have something to do with the way Win98 manages it...got any tips on improving that ? OR the name of some programs that would allow me to see how much memory each application is using...

I have heard that the icons on desktop and the system tray take up quite a few , is that the case with Win 98 ?

You more than likely are not running out of ram but rather running low on
'SYSTEM RESOURCES'.

Try making sure that your WINDOWS \ TEMP directory is cleaned out regularly.

If your hard drive is running low on free space, the pagefile (swapfile) needs to
fit itself on the drive, moving deleted files off and on. Try defragging the drive
or clearing space if space is low.

How many resources are running in the background? And what are you using the computer for? You can see how many resources each program uses. Win98se uses up to 80 mg ram (approximately). I am running win 98se with 1 gig ram, but that is for gaming.

I highly recommend Cacheman for all 9x installs. The older versions were a bit simpler, but gave me the stability and speed of 2k. The newer versions have more options, which can be nice, albeit a little intimidating.

I may have an old copy on a zip disk somewhere. I can check my zip disks at home if you like.

Cacheman was a must for me with 9x OSes.

One tip is to restart Windows after playing any games -- a lot of games have memory and resources leaks, and W9x seems much worse at recovering the lost objects than W2K / WXP.

I used to get that after/while playing java games, especially at Yahoo. It wasn't as bad after I downloaded Sun's version of the java machine.

Just reboot every other day. That clears up any memory leak problems. Seriously, Win9x are really bad at memory management. I used to do a fresh install about every 5-6 months when I used 95 and 98.

the biggest problem in w98 is that vcache is alllowed to run wild, eventually using all your ram.

to limit vcache... open c:\windows\system.ini in notepad.
scroll down to where it says [vcache] and enter a new line so it looks like this....
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=131072

that will fix it right up
(vcache is your HD cache in your memory ~ MaxFileCache is in KB)

* all win98/se/me users should limit their vcache to 1/4 - 1/2 of their systems memory.
this will also allow you to run upto 1gb of ram in those OSes too.

also run msconfig and take out any starup items you dont need
