Windows 98 Registry Checker restarts continuously

I downloaded some USB drives that I believe were not compatible with my system (which was supposed to be used to get my system to recognize a USB Keyboard). During the reboot, the system straight to the Windows Registry to boot to the last safest registry. The message said one was located and would reboot to that data. However, when it reboots it goes right back to the registry checker and says the same thing; and the problem repeats.

I have an ABS system, and have been on hold for over 30 minutes with no support at all. I bout the system in late 2000, but I'm not sure of the "tag" name they used that year. I am running Windows 98 SE on a PIII 800Mhz with 256 MB.

If the system files are screwed, would I be able to put in a new HDD and place the old HDD in an external drive in order to retrieve documents, etc...?

Also, what does it mean to "delete the Windows folder only and set up Windows 98". Will that just restore the Windows file settings but keep the documents & program files?

Yes, you would be able to retrieve your files. I would suggest upgrading to windows xp.

Finally got through tech support and he basically suggested getting a new drive or reformatting (which is not an option).

When I get the new drive and go to XP, will there be problems with documents/files from the slave drive [which was under win98se]?
