I have been hearing people say this for a very long time now, and that 2k/xp support over the 256 meg limit. Can someone please point me to an article / spec sheet so I can confirm this on more then word of mouth??

Thanks

It's entirely totally and absolutely false. youc an find difinitive proof of it's falsehood at many sites on the net including MS's own site.

There is no more truth to these claims then the popular belief that Win95 can't recognize above 64MB of RAM.

Win98 doesnt utilize 512MB+ of RAM very well, but it definitely can recognize higher amounts and use them if necessary.

Incorrect information. Win9x supports up to 4 GB of RAM. Once you reach 512 MB, however, you have to "tweak" the OS or you'll get out-of-memory errors and such.

WinNT/2K/Xp support up to 8 GB of RAM.

no, but i can give you some more word of mouth...win9x supports up to 512megs without adjustments, but with more than that you need to make some changes to the cache settings

edit: did you get enough answers at THE SAME TIME!!! i think the 256meg rule is mainly because of the inferior memory management of win9x compared to win2k. it can easily handle over 256megs...but not that effeciently

Yeah, you can slap 512 Mb in there without any changes, and if you are itching for more than that, then you can make some slight changes to take in the greater memory.

Actually that is incorrect...

Win2K Pro is 2 CPU/4 GB
Win2K Server is 4 CPU/8 GB
Win2K Adv Server is 8 CPU/16 GB
Win2K DataCenter is 32 CPU/32 GB

Myth, myth, myth.....

I known of the i815 chipset only support 512Mb of RAM but not the WIN98.

How win98 utilize large amount of RAM is another question.

Why would you WANT to use more than 512 MB of RAM in Win9x, anyways? If you've got that much RAM, use Win2K or Linux or something. Win2K works for games almost as well and Win9x with the exception of a bunch of older games, but besides that most work fine.

just to clarify, Win9x can theoretically support 2 GB of physical ram, and another 2 GB of virtual ram! :)
