Windows 98 Networking Issues

One day went to print to a printer over our network and couldn't get it to work. Checked settings etc. and couldn't get the stupid thing to ping anything.

Attempted to uninstall network protocols and start over. Even removed NIC drivers and reinstalled that. Now I click on Add in the Network settings window and absolutely nothing happens. The modem's TCP/IP protocol is still there but I can't add one for the NIC. Even bought a new NIC and had same problem.

Would like to try and fix this without having to reinstall Windows.
Please HELP!
