Hi, I have upgraded my system with a P4 2.4Ghz processor and am running windows 98 and get the following error on bootup: "Windows Protection Error while initializing device NDIS"

I was told I need to get a hotfix file named: 28-Nov-2001 11:05 4.10.0.2000 157,909 Ndis.vxd

If this will fix this problem does anyone have a link to where I can get this file? It's not freely available on the Microsoft site or perhaps I just can't find it.

Thanks~

I'm running Win 98 SE on this 2.0 GHz Athlon, right now. In WINDOWS\SYSTEM, I have:

NDIS.VXD 166,029 04-23-99

According to this service bulletin, I'm running close to the edge, and you're over it.
Windows Protection Error in NDIS with a CPU That Is Faster Than 2.1 GHz
.
.
CAUSE

The timing calibration code in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) driver causes a divide by zero if the CPU runs at 2.2 GHz or faster. This problem does not occur with CPUs that run at 2.1 GHz or slower.

28-Nov-2001 11:05 4.10.0.2000 157,909 Ndis.vxd
RESOLUTION

Windows 98

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
.
.
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

28-Nov-2001 11:05 4.10.0.2000 157,909 Ndis.vxd
[/list]

The hotfix I previously linked was NOT the right one. See my update post, below.

What are you doing running such a POS like indows 98 on that good of a system. If you are using Windows 98 as your primary OS on that PC for running applications produced in the last three years, that is a HUGE MISTAKE and an unwise decision. Use Windows 2000/XP for that prupose. Enough said.

Windows 98/ME are flat out POS and should have died years ago when it comes the latest hardware and software!!

If you're talking to me, you're right about ME, but you don't know what I'm doing with it. Win 98 SE with all critical updates isn't half bad. It took them long enough, but it's pretty cool once you tame it. I have some extra tweaks I've done that keep it very smooth and reliable.

1. I have a couple of legacy DOS apps on this machine that need real DOS to work correctly. One is my old $500 printed circuit layout program that still works better and faster than the Windows apps I have that cost thousands.

2. I have nothing else on this machine that needs any app that doesn't run under Win 98 SE, including Office 2000 and anything else I need.

3. My basic rule about Microsoft operating systems is not to move to a new one until it's been out at least two years. I'm glad to let the MS fanbois be the guinneapigs and debug their crap before I waste time deling with a new OS when my current one works.

4. I'm in the middle of setting up a new drive for this machine with XP Pro SP2. I've figured out how to get most of my necessary legacy apps working to an acceptable, if not perfect level, but some of the installation disks for basic crap like my HP printer won't even come up under XP Pro so I have to figure out some work arounds to get them happening.

5. I still like being able to get "under the hood" and fix at least some stuff with nothing more than a DOS based ASCII text editor.

6. If you don't need XP, why spend $150 - $200 to buy nothing?

kingdur -- I PM'd you. LMK if you'd like a floppy disk that will automatically install my tweaks. It's customizable to suit your requirements, and it'll keep Win 98 SE much happier. The installation is easy and 100% reversable if you don't like what it does. :)

If the file that Harvey has linked to it is not the correct one then PM me with your e-mail address as I have the correct file stored somewhere.
btw I dual boot Windows 98/XP on a 3.8GHz system.

The file in my link is NOT the newer version. The service bulletin says:
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
I called Microsoft and asked if this situation met their conditions. The CSR agreed and sent e-mailed me this url for the hotfix

Two things worth noting:

1. She said this fix has not been "fully regressed," meaning tested under all circumstances Backup your system before doing it.

2. The link is only good for seven days and requires this password: kvdChzs+

If the link has expired before you get there, take bacillus up on his offer, or ask me, and I'll send it to you. I'll have tested it by then. :)

Hi Harvey, I am new with the site and don't know what the initials mean LMK I assume this means something like "Let me know" Ok well if you can push me those files but is this for the Win 98 first version which as I recall its 98 SE? I thought that ment second edition perhaps not... if your files are for the original Win 98 and if you have the hotfix (Ndis.vxd) thats all I need to complete the boot up process for now.
my email is kingdur2000@go.com

Thanks~

Hi Harvey, I found this reply after I sent you the request for the hotfix file but seems this URL is it... I will try it and since this will be going on a new hard drive a back up may not be needed.

PS: I will let you know if it works after this weekend.

Thanks in advance ~
